Una piramide con base rettangolare ha il punto A come vertice e i punti B, C, D, E sono invece i vertici del rettangolo (la base). Sapendo che AB=90, AC=70, AD=20, quanto vale AE?

Chiamo $H$ il piede dell'altezza della piramide che cade sulla base rettangolare. La cosa da notare è che
$BH^2 + DH^2 =CH^2 + EH^2$.
Dunque in particolare aggiungendo a entrambe le equazioni la stessa quantità $(AH^2 + AH^2)$ Allora
$(BH^2+AH^2)+(DH^2+AH^2) =(CH^2+AH^2) + (EH^2+AH^2) $
Quindi $90^2 + 20^2 = 70^2 + AE^2 $
$AE = \sqrt{90^2 - 70^2 + 20^2} =\sqrt{160⋅20 + 20⋅20}=\sqrt{180⋅20} = \sqrt{36⋅100}=60$
$BH^2 + DH^2 =CH^2 + EH^2$.
Dunque in particolare aggiungendo a entrambe le equazioni la stessa quantità $(AH^2 + AH^2)$ Allora
$(BH^2+AH^2)+(DH^2+AH^2) =(CH^2+AH^2) + (EH^2+AH^2) $
Quindi $90^2 + 20^2 = 70^2 + AE^2 $
$AE = \sqrt{90^2 - 70^2 + 20^2} =\sqrt{160⋅20 + 20⋅20}=\sqrt{180⋅20} = \sqrt{36⋅100}=60$
